Myoko Kogen
In our 5 day clinics we will always do at least one day exploring at least one of these wonderful resorts if not more.
Situated on Japan’s main island, Honshu and just a 2.5 hour train ride from Tokyo, Myoko Kogen (Myoko) is an untapped mecca for the keenest skiers and snowboarders. Myoko is made up of 9 mountain areas including: Myoko Akakura Onsen, Akakura Kanko (aka Akakan), Myoko Ski Park. Ikenotaira Onsen, Myoko Suginohara, Seki Onsen,
Each of the different mountain areas offer distinct features meaning that all levels of skiers and snowboarders are covered. Coupled with a mega average annual snowfall of 14 metres of Japan’s famous fluffy powder snow, it’s no surprise that Myoko is a hotspot for all levels of riders, including Japan’s imperial family who visit the area each year!
Sitting at the base of the 2,454m ‘Myoko-san’ peak, the township of Myoko Kogen is a traditional Japanese ski town which offers Japanese-style bars and restaurants and of course, onsen hot springs. You can find all types of accommodation options from ‘ryokan’ guest houses to ritzy hotels and from pensions to backpackers.
The scenery of Myoko Kogen is stunning, dominated by Mt Myoko (Myoko-san), Lake Nojiri (Nojiriko) and the historical entrance to the Echigo Plains. For a day off snow, you can visit the snow monkeys in Jigokudani Monkey Park, a popular day trip from Myoko.
Often referred to as the ‘heart of Japan’ or the ‘Zermatt’ of Japan, if you are looking for a place with excellent skiing and snowboarding, bottomless powder, rich Japanese history and beautiful vistas, Myoko is the pick.
